With the arrival of spring comes the desire to go outside and explore, and one of my favorite things to do is visit the farmer's markets and peruse the stands for new vegetables to try, a passion I've diligently documented in the Spring Discovery series on this website. With the help of friends and vegetable-focused cookbooks, I've made many delicious discoveries since moving to America from Malaysia. 

This year, my focus turns to Asian vegetables, some I grew up eating and took for granted, some I've known about but lost track of since I moved due to name inconsistencies or differences in appearance, and some completely new to me. It's time to get reacquainted with some old friends and make new ones.

We're at the height of tomato season in our backyard. I feel like a proud mama watching the cherry tomato plants grow from little seedlings into the lush network of fruit-bearing machines they are now. Before this, I'd never grown anything, save for sprouting some beans on the kitchen top, but that doesn't count. Not everything we planted took off though, so we're still figuring things out around the garden as we go along. But for now, we're popping these juicy tomatoes in our mouth and admiring the faint hint of green that our thumbs are developing.

We’ve been eating zucchini every day in the past few weeks. At times for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Not that we are complaining. We planted the summer squash for its high and fast yield. As first-time gardeners, we needed that boost of confidence. And our zucchini plants have rewarded our attempt with a mighty encouraging pat on the back. Seriously, turn your back away and out shoot a couple of them.
